Rearrange Me
if you could rearrange me
what would you change and why
where would you start to blame me
and how hard would you try
see where the years left holes in me
fix me if you have time
i see where you made a fool of me
for the very last time
haven't i waited patiently
i held on to your same old lines
didn't i show you last time
how to read my mind
i see you lonely - i know you're lonely - i hear you hanging on
i see you lonely
i know you're lonely
i feel like it's almost gone
he points out a dream
she points out the seam
they point out the same old times
but listen to just how long it takes
to change their minds
what did you take away from me
watching the smiles fly by
why did you take her away from me
enjoy her when you get time
now you know where you are welcome
and you know where you better not try
didn't i ask you nicely
never to come by
maybe you thought you'd change me
maybe you thought you'd try
maybe you rearranged me
but you never knew why...

...quite simply, this is a song written about trying to change someone. what a silly idea. we wait, try, pray, and cry a whole bunch hoping that the ones that we think are the closest to us will actually change. i wrote this song late one night in my livingroom with a small tape recorder handy. one vocal riff led to another and another. the lyrics spilled out pretty quickly. we always get a great response from folks whenever we play this song.
i didn't have a chorus ready on my way to record it. i kept humming and whistling this line "i see you lonely...".
we did a take or two and it all just came out. pretty cool. i wish they were all that easy.
(by the way, nobody ever changes. EVER. spare yourself - and get out while you still have energy and lots of love in your heart to give to someone who will actually appreciate it!)
